The Knicks were a surprise playoff team in coach Tom Thibodeau’s maiden season two years ago, building expectations that the team was turning the corner. But they slipped down to 11th in the conference last year and they’ve now missed out on the playoffs in eight of the last nine seasons.
After coming tantalizingly close to adding a true superstar in PG Donovan Mitchell to help turbo charge the reboot, we’ll see what the make up of this team now. The key addition this offseason was over spending to add 2021-22 breakout player Jalen Brunson who paired so well with Luka Doncic on the Mavs.
The team is banking on their young talent, namely RJ Barrett (22), Cam Reddish (23), Quentin Grimes (22), Immanuel Quickley (23) and Obi Toppin (24) taking a leap of their own.
There’s a lot to like about these Knicks, but not a lot to love as they continue to go through a slow build in a vastly improved Eastern Conference.

The Knicks absolutely have it in them to be a sneaky good team this year and challenge for a playoff spot. Top-six and a guaranteed berth seems like stretch given the level of competition in the East, but a top-10 finish and a battle for a play-in spot seems about right.
They have a nice mix of youth and experience and the addition of Brunson to help direct the squad and boost the offense could prove major dividends. He was that good for the Mavs last year, so missing out on Mitchell could be a blessing in disguise. As such, there is some good value to be found in them as a playoff team.
