Game Preview
The Atlanta Braves will send veteran Reynaldo Lopez to the mound on Sunday to face Philadelphia Phillies rookie Michael Mercado in the deciding game of their three-game series between the top teams in the National League East.
The series is tied, with the Phillies winning 8-6 on Friday and the Braves taking a 5-1 victory on Saturday. While Atlanta leads the season series 3-2, Philadelphia maintains a nine-game lead in the division.
Mercado (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will make his third major league appearance and second start. He earned his first win on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits and two walks, with four strikeouts.
"That tells you a little bit about his makeup and his poise," said Phillies manager Rob Thomson.
It has been 17 years since a Phillies pitcher allowed no more than two hits and one run in five-plus innings in his first major league start, the last being Fabio Castro in 2007.
"It was one of those things that you dream about doing at a place this historic," Mercado said.
Lopez (6-2, 1.83 ERA) has thrived since the Braves converted him back to a starting pitcher. Atlanta has managed his workload carefully, ensuring ample rest between starts. Only one of his 15 starts has come on four days’ rest, with six starts coming on six days’ rest.
