Game Preview
The National League’s top contenders will clash as the Philadelphia Phillies visit the Los Angeles Dodgers to kick off a three-game series on Monday night.
The Phillies snapped a season-long six-game losing streak with a 6-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, led by Zack Wheeler’s dominant eight-inning performance with nine strikeouts.
Despite being atop the National League, the Phillies’ recent struggles have tested their resolve.
"We have too much talent here to stay down for long," catcher J.T. Realmuto said. "We’re confident we’ll turn things around and be stronger for it."
The Dodgers, meanwhile, finished a tough road trip with a 3-2 victory against the Oakland Athletics. They had lost five straight road series before taking two of three games from the A’s.
Philadelphia will start right-hander Aaron Nola (11-4, 3.43 ERA), who hasn’t earned a decision in his last three starts despite allowing only three runs in his past two outings. Nola’s last appearance against the Dodgers was a win on July 11, where he pitched six innings, allowing one run.
The Dodgers will counter with All-Star Tyler Glasnow (8-6, 3.50 ERA), making his third start since returning from a back injury. Glasnow has faced the Phillies just three times in his career, with a 6.23 ERA and no decision.
The Dodgers’ bullpen showed improvement on Sunday, holding the A’s to just one hit over 4 1/3 scoreless innings. With closer Evan Phillips struggling, left-hander Anthony Banda earned his first career save.
All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman missed the road trip to care for his sick son but is expected to return soon. In Freeman’s absence, Cavan Biggio has stepped up, driving in six RBIs over the last seven games, including the decisive RBI on Sunday.
