Game Preview

It took Francisco Lindor over five months to miss his first game this season, but the New York Mets didn’t skip a beat, racking up 30 runs in three games without him. The Mets look to extend their offensive dominance when they continue their series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Mets left-hander David Peterson (9-2, 2.85 ERA) will face Phillies southpaw Cristopher Sanchez (10-9, 3.24) in the matchup.

The Mets powered past the Phillies 10-6 in Thursday’s series opener, with Brandon Nimmo leading the charge with a tie-breaking homer and three RBIs. This victory maintained the Mets’ tie with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the last two NL wild-card spots, while staying two games clear of the Atlanta Braves.

Despite Lindor’s back issues sidelining him after playing 147 games, the Mets have notched up their first-ever streak of three consecutive games scoring 10 runs.

Nimmo, Pete Alonso, Francisco Alvarez, and Luisangel Acuna each have two home runs in the last three games. Acuna, a rookie, has hit his first major league homers this week after being called up in Lindor’s absence.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s depth, noting that different players have stepped up to fuel the recent offensive surge.

The Phillies’ attempts to clinch a playoff berth stalled despite mounting several rallies. Trea Turner hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the third, and Philadelphia narrowed the Mets’ lead to 9-6 in the seventh before ultimately falling short.

Both starting pitchers are meeting for the second consecutive game after neither factored in the decision last Sunday. Peterson had delivered a one-run performance over 7 2/3 innings, and Sanchez had allowed one run across seven innings.

Peterson holds a 1-2 record with a 4.57 ERA in nine career appearances against the Phillies, while Sanchez is 1-2 with a 3.62 ERA in eight appearances against the Mets, including two starts this season with a 2.84 ERA.
