San Diego Padres: Surf, Sun, and Streaky Baseball
The Padres came out swinging in Game 1 and now look to ride the SoCal wave to another win over the visiting Phillies. San Diego is a solid 30-17 at Petco, which is ironic since they occasionally forget how to play baseball on the road. Still, give them credit, they’ve mastered the art of “Win when we don’t give up a home run,” going 29-7 in such games.
Luis Arraez continues to be baseball’s version of a slap-hitting metronome, rarely flashy, always effective. Manny Machado has been heating up too, even if he still looks like he’s bored half the time. And Yu Darvish? Well, he’s back… we think. With a 4.91 ERA and just five strikeouts this year, Darvish’s stuff is about as sharp as a pool noodle right now. But hey, maybe Saturday’s the day he finds that elusive second gear or at least doesn’t walk half the infield.
Philadelphia Phillies: Pitching Like It’s 2008
Zack Wheeler is the reason sportsbooks are sweating this line. With a 2.17 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and enough strikeouts to open his own barber shop (148, to be exact), the man is mowing down hitters like he’s late for dinner.
The Phillies offense, led by Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos, continues to do what it does best, launch baseballs into orbit and then forget how to hit for four innings straight. Schwarber already has 30 bombs, which explains why he never runs, he’s too busy admiring his work.
Despite being a .500 team on the road, Philly’s recent form shows promise, with a +17 run differential over their last 10. If Wheeler can keep the ball out of the hot zones, this is their game to take.
Prediction:
Darvish is still finding his groove (or at least his strike zone), and Wheeler is locked in. Expect the Phillies to bounce back and even the series behind their ace, while the Padres wonder if their offensive strategy should be “hope for errors.”
