Game Preview

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Tyler Phillips is off to a remarkable start in his rookie season.

A native of South New Jersey and a longtime Phillies fan, Phillips has won three of his first four outings, showcasing his skills with a shutout performance against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday.

Phillips (3-0, 1.80 ERA) is set to pitch in the opener of a three-game interleague series against the Seattle Mariners on Friday. He will face off against Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo (4-1, 2.35), with both pitchers making their first appearance against each other.

Phillips received a standing ovation from Phillies fans as he returned for the ninth inning with an 8-0 lead.

"It was an incredible feeling," Phillips said of the crowd’s reaction. "It gave me chills. I was trying to stay composed, but it felt like I could throw 100 mph at that moment. All I wanted was to finish strong."

He struck out the first two batters in the ninth and secured his third major league start with a complete-game shutout.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson praised Phillips’ composure, noting, "Going into the ninth inning with a chance for a complete-game shutout is nerve-wracking for many, but he stayed incredibly calm."

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber, who hit one of the Phillies’ four homers in that game, added, "It’s amazing to see him come through like this, especially given his background as a fan of the team. He handled the moment perfectly."

The Phillies, currently leading the National League East, are in need of more performances like Phillips’. They’ve lost four straight games and are 3-9 since the All-Star break. Their once 10-game lead has shrunk to six games over the Atlanta Braves, who won on Thursday.

"We’re a talented team, and we know we need to turn things around," said Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper.

The Mariners are also experiencing challenges. Their 10-game lead in the American League West as of June 18 has evaporated, leaving them tied with the Houston Astros at the start of August.

Seattle lost 3-2 in 10 innings to Boston on Wednesday, ending a 4-2 road trip.
