Las Vegas Aces: Searching for Breathing Room
The defending champs looked gassed in Game 1 but still managed to steal it with a late surge, beating Phoenix despite sluggish nights from their top stars. A’ja Wilson poured in 21 points but looked visibly worn down. Jackie Young chipped in only 10 and missed shootaround due to “fatigue”, though Coach Becky Hammon joked it was from “carrying the team.”
The real spark came from the Aces’ bench mob. Dana Evans exploded for 21 points, with 9 coming in crunch time, and Jewell Loyd added 18. That kind of bench production bailed Vegas out after a slow offensive start.
Still, if the Aces want to cover the -2.5 spread again, they’ll need Wilson and Young to look more like the All-Stars we know. Expect cleaner shot selection and a more deliberate half-court attack this time around.
Prediction: Dana Evans Over 7.5 Points – Evans’ confidence is sky-high after her Game 1 heroics, and with defenses focusing on Wilson and Young, she’ll see open looks again.
Phoenix Mercury: Frustrated but Far from Finished
Phoenix had Game 1 in the bag for 34 minutes before the wheels fell off. They entered well-rested after sweeping Minnesota and got a supernova first half from Kahleah Cooper, who drilled five triples. Even more impressively, they held Vegas’ dynamic duo to subpar shooting nights.
But missed free throws in the final seconds (looking at you, Alyssa Thomas) and a late-game scoring drought turned what could’ve been a statement road win into a gut-punch loss.
The good news? Thomas and Sami Whitcomb appear healthy despite injury scares, and Coach Nate Tibbetts isn’t panicking. He knows they’ll have to win in Vegas eventually, might as well even the series now.
Prediction: Kahleah Cooper Over 16.5 Points – After torching the Aces from deep in Game 1, Cooper should keep firing, especially if Phoenix wants to dictate pace and space out the defense.
