Game Preview
The Arizona Diamondbacks are riding high with a season-best five games above .500 and aim for their fifth consecutive win as they conclude a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday in Phoenix.
Arizona’s success in the first two games of this series contributed to their fourth straight series win and an undefeated streak in their last eight series. Since a June 28 loss to the Oakland Athletics, the Diamondbacks have turned things around dramatically, going 16-7, reminiscent of their unexpected run to last season’s World Series.
"We’re just taking it one game at a time," said Diamondbacks outfielder Jake McCarthy, who had a career night on Saturday with five hits, all singles. "We’ve got good momentum and are playing solid baseball. It’s all about focusing on each day."
McCarthy’s performance marked the first time a Diamondbacks player had five hits in a game since David Peralta in 2021. "I was just trying to keep my at-bats tight and make contact, especially with two strikes," McCarthy explained.
The Diamondbacks also strengthened their bullpen this week, acquiring left-hander A.J. Puk from the Miami Marlins. Puk made his team debut with a scoreless eighth inning on Saturday, continuing his strong July performance.
Despite recent successes, the Pirates have struggled in Phoenix, losing the first two games of the series. Shortstop Oneil Cruz highlighted Saturday’s game for Pittsburgh with a mammoth 472-foot home run and a triple, showcasing his power with his 16th homer of the season.
