Game Preview
The Carolina Hurricanes are delivering wins in multiple ways, staying consistent early this season. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to shake off struggles as they prepare to face the Hurricanes Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C.
Carolina enters the matchup on a seven-game winning streak, having scored twice in the last 31 seconds to clinch a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. “Good teams find a way to win,” noted forward Martin Necas, who scored the go-ahead goal for the Hurricanes.
For Pittsburgh, success has been elusive, leaving the team frustrated. “We just need to play better,” said Penguins coach Mike Sullivan.
With a 9-2-0 record, Carolina has reached nine wins faster than nearly any season since 2021-22, yet Tuesday’s game wasn’t without its challenges. "Sometimes you have to win that way," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “It’s hard to look good every night in this league.”
Necas, currently on a seven-game point streak, is one of the standouts in Carolina’s impressive start. “It feels good to build some chemistry,” Necas commented, while teammate Jack Drury added, “He’s been unbelievable.”
The Hurricanes are also benefiting from strong contributions from their veterans. Jordan Martinook notched his first goal of the season, while defenseman Brent Burns recorded two assists.
The Hurricanes previously defeated the Penguins 4-1 on Oct. 18 in Pittsburgh, with Necas scoring a goal and an assist. Goalie Frederik Andersen, who made 25 saves in that game, will sit out this rematch due to injury.
For Pittsburgh, Alex Nedeljkovic has started the last three games in net. The Penguins, who saw their two-game win streak end with a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday, are 0-3-2 in their last five road games.
As the Hurricanes wrap up their four-game homestand, they’ll face a familiar opponent for the first time this season.
