Game Preview
Jack Flaherty, a Burbank native and former Harvard-Westlake High School standout, will make his home debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Acquired by the Dodgers at the trade deadline, Flaherty is set to pitch at Dodger Stadium for the first time since joining the team. In his Dodgers debut last Saturday, he threw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in a 10-0 win over the Oakland Athletics, improving his season record to 8-5 with a 2.80 ERA between the Detroit Tigers and Dodgers.
"I’m just excited to be here and help the team," Flaherty said after his debut. "Winning is what matters most."
Flaherty has an impressive track record against the Pirates, with a 9-1 record and a 2.52 ERA in 16 career appearances (15 starts).
The Dodgers are eager for Flaherty’s contribution as they recently dropped two of three games to the top-ranked Philadelphia Phillies. Following a controversial obstruction call that contributed to a 9-4 loss on Wednesday, the Dodgers’ lead in the NL West was cut to 2.5 games. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts was ejected for arguing the call, which he felt negatively impacted the game.
The Pirates, meanwhile, are struggling with a four-game losing streak and have dropped six of their last seven games. Their bullpen has been a major concern during a 1-5 homestand, with closer David Bednar blowing save opportunities and late-inning reliever Colin Holderman landing on the injured list.
Despite rallying from behind in recent games, the Pirates have struggled to close out victories. They will start right-hander Mitch Keller (10-5, 3.20 ERA) on Friday. Keller has faced the Dodgers four times in his career, with a 2-2 record and a 5.79 ERA, though he did notch 10 strikeouts in a start against them last April.
