Game Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals are capitalizing on the final stretch of a challenging season by focusing on development for the future.

Rookie outfielder Jordan Walker is among those gaining valuable experience, highlighted by his three-run double in Wednesday’s 10-5 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals (77-75) aim for a series sweep Thursday night in St. Louis.

Walker, rebounding from a slow start, has hit .271 this September with an .897 OPS, featuring a five-game hitting streak during which he’s batted .333 with two doubles and two homers.

"Jordan is building confidence with every game-changing moment, which will be crucial for his future," said Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol. "Adjusting at this level is tough, and his current success is a positive sign."

St. Louis will start right-hander Erick Fedde (8-9, 3.45 ERA) in the series finale. Since being traded from the Chicago White Sox, Fedde has posted a 4.43 ERA over eight starts. He pitched five innings against Toronto last Friday, yielding three runs in a no-decision effort.

Fedde has a modest history against the Pirates, holding a 1-0 record and a 3.60 ERA in two career starts.

Conversely, the Pirates (71-81), looking to break a losing streak, will send Luis Ortiz (6-6, 3.45 ERA) to the mound. Ortiz struggled in his last start, conceding seven runs in four innings to Kansas City. Despite a strong finish to August, his September has seen him allow 11 runs over nearly 10 innings.

Ortiz has had limited success against St. Louis, with a 14.63 ERA in three starts, including a relief appearance earlier this season where he gave up a run over two innings.

Both teams made adjustments to their rosters ahead of Wednesday’s game. The Cardinals placed starter Lance Lynn on the injured list and recalled Michael McGreevy, who secured a win in relief Wednesday. The Pirates moved reliever Kyle Nicolas to the injured list and noted that Oneil Cruz was again absent from the lineup due to ankle soreness.
