Game Preview

Victor Wembanyama ran away with NBA Rookie of the Year last season, but his top competitor, Chet Holmgren, was equally impactful, helping Oklahoma City Thunder clinch the best record in the West and secure a playoff series win. Wednesday night’s clash in Oklahoma City sees these two young powerhouses go head-to-head for the first time this season as Wembanyama’s Spurs visit Holmgren’s Thunder.

With the matchup drawing a lot of interest, Zach Collins from San Antonio noted, “It’s two big guys going at it, like a classic battle. It’s old-school, two heavyweights who take this matchup personally.” Last season, the Thunder took three of their four games against the Spurs, despite a standout 28-point, 13-rebound game from Wembanyama that bolstered his Rookie of the Year campaign. Meanwhile, Holmgren contributed solid averages of 14.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in those games.

This season, Wembanyama has been adjusting to the NBA pace after an intense offseason, averaging 20 points, 12 boards, 2.3 assists, and 2.7 blocks. However, his three-point accuracy is down at 22.2%, below last year’s 32.5%. “I’m in shape,” Wembanyama stated. “Now it’s about syncing with my teammates and adapting to how teams guard us. There’s room for all of us to get better.”

Holmgren, on the other hand, has come out hot, averaging 23.7 points, 13 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 4.0 blocks while helping OKC to an impressive 3-0 start. Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault isn’t holding back on his young talent, opting not to limit minutes early on, despite a packed schedule. “These guys are young; they can go,” Daigneault said. “No need to bubble-wrap them.”

OKC’s early success is driven by its defense, holding opponents to just 90.8 points per 100 possessions, the best defensive rating in the league. “Our intensity is high,” said Daigneault, adding, “But it’s about maintaining that level every game.”

In terms of roster updates, the Thunder will be missing some frontcourt depth with Isaiah Hartenstein, Jaylin Williams, and Kenrich Williams sidelined. The Spurs will also be without guard Tre Jones for a third straight game due to an ankle sprain, adding a layer of intrigue to the lineup dynamics.

This clash promises value for bettors interested in player props and team spreads, as both teams bring youth, intensity, and stakes into what could be a thrilling midweek matchup.
