Game Preview

As the Arizona Diamondbacks wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against the San Diego Padres, many uncertainties loom.

However, Arizona knows it needs to secure as many wins as possible, starting with Friday night’s matchup in Phoenix.

The Diamondbacks (88-71) are locked in a tight race for the final two National League wild-card spots alongside the New York Mets (87-70) and Atlanta Braves (86-71).

The Mets and Braves had their last two games postponed due to rain, including the effects of Hurricane Helene. They are scheduled for a doubleheader on Monday, which could determine playoff placements.

"Why not?" said Arizona first baseman Christian Walker. "Anything that makes it more exciting is welcome. It’ll definitely be fun to watch."

Arizona can bolster its chances by performing well against the Padres (91-68).

"We’ll give it our best for these next three games," said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo. "We know what’s at stake, and we need to be at our best. I’m confident we’ll rise to the challenge."

The Diamondbacks halted a three-game losing streak with an 8-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday and had a day off on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Padres, who have already secured a wild-card spot, were knocked out of the NL West race after a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

"We’re very disappointed," said San Diego manager Mike Shildt. "That was one of our goals, and we came up short. But we need to move forward."

Now, San Diego aims to win two games this weekend to secure the top wild-card spot, granting them the No. 4 seed and home-field advantage in the first round.

"We’re excited about what lies ahead," Shildt added. "We’ll shake off the disappointment and be ready to compete in Arizona for our ultimate goal."

San Diego has dropped the last two games against the Dodgers after winning nine of the previous ten.

On Thursday, they went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

In response to the loss, San Diego has moved right-hander Yu Darvish (6-3, 3.18 ERA) up a day to start Friday’s opener. Darvish is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last three starts and recorded nine strikeouts in a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Darvish has not faced the Diamondbacks this season and holds an 8-4 record with a 3.55 ERA in 18 career starts against them.

Ketel Marte (11-for-37) and Walker (8-for-28) each have two homers against Darvish, while Corbin Carroll is 6-for-11 with a homer.

Arizona will counter with right-hander Merrill Kelly (5-0, 3.71 ERA), who has a solid track record against San Diego, going 9-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 15 career starts against them. This will be Kelly’s first appearance against the Padres this season.

Fernando Tatis Jr. has performed well against Kelly, hitting 8-for-22 with four home runs, while Manny Machado (6-for-35), Jake Cronenworth (4-for-22), and Elias Diaz (5-for-25) have each hit one homer.

The 35-year-old Kelly is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in four September starts, having struck out 22 and walked four in 22 innings this month. He recently defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings.

The season series between the Diamondbacks and Padres is currently split at five games each.
