Game Preview
The Colorado Rockies effectively signaled a transition to rebuilding mode a month ago by focusing on younger talent, and right-hander Bradley Blalock is set to benefit from this shift.
Blalock, 23, acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on July 27, made his major league debut with Colorado on Monday. He will make his second start as the Rockies wrap up their three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon in Denver.
Blalock (0-0, 4.05 ERA) faces the Padres for the second time, with veteran right-hander Joe Musgrove (3-4, 5.20) taking the mound for San Diego.
Blalock initially appeared in the majors with the Brewers on June 20, tossing a scoreless inning against the Padres.
Colorado catcher Drew Romo was recently added to the roster to replace Elias Diaz, who was released on Friday. Romo made his debut on Saturday night.
"Diaz was valued, and his absence will be felt in many ways," Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt said. "However, this move is part of our effort to improve. Giving Drew an opportunity is a crucial first step."
Romo, 22, was drafted by the Rockies in 2020 and was the top prospect in Triple-A, where he hit 14 home runs in 85 games with Albuquerque this season. He went 0-for-4 on Saturday night but reached base on a fielder’s choice.
While the Rockies focus on the future, the Padres are thriving in the present, having won 20 of their last 24 games.
Musgrove, who missed the early part of the Padres’ recent success due to elbow inflammation and triceps tendinitis, returned to form last week. After receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection, he did not pitch for a month. In his return against Pittsburgh on Monday, he allowed just two hits over 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
"Joe was back to his old self," said San Diego manager Mike Shildt. "He made excellent pitches, and it’s great to have him back."
Musgrove adjusted his delivery during rehab to reduce stress on his elbow, focusing on better body mechanics and using his lower half more effectively.
Sunday marks Musgrove’s 12th start of the season and his ninth career start against Colorado. He has a 4-3 record with a 3.06 ERA versus the Rockies, including a 1-1 record with a 4.50 ERA in Denver.
