Game Preview

As the Los Angeles Dodgers approach their 11th National League West title in 12 years, they bring with them a formidable force that has been absent during their previous division wins.

Shohei Ohtani is in peak form just before the Dodgers begin a crucial three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

Ohtani’s remarkable 50-50 season stands out, but his recent performance in Miami—where he recorded six hits, three home runs, two steals, and 10 RBIs—has achieved legendary status. This incredible display was part of a historically significant week.

In his last seven games, Ohtani hit .500 (16-for-32) with six home runs, seven stolen bases, 11 runs, 17 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.668. No player has ever accomplished six home runs and seven steals in just seven games.

His spectacular week concluded on Sunday with four hits, two stolen bases, and a game-tying home run to start the ninth inning. Just three pitches later, Mookie Betts secured a 6-5 victory for the Dodgers against the Colorado Rockies with his own home run.

"Starting that ninth inning with Shohei doing his thing makes him seem almost superhuman," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remarked. "I haven’t seen a player as focused and locked in as he is in quite a while."

The Dodgers (93-63) have a magic number of four to clinch the division title over the second-place Padres.

In the series opener, the Dodgers will start rookie right-hander Landon Knack (3-4, 3.39 ERA), who recently pitched five scoreless innings in a win against the Miami Marlins. This will be Knack’s first matchup against the Padres.

Despite their efforts, the Padres find themselves pressed for time as they try to catch the Dodgers. They thought they had narrowed the gap to two games on Sunday before Ohtani’s and Betts’ late-game heroics.

San Diego is on a four-game winning streak after sweeping the struggling Chicago White Sox and has won eight of their last nine games, but that run has only gained them two games in the standings.

With a record of 90-66, the Padres have reached 90 wins for the first time since 2010, and their magic number for clinching a playoff spot is down to one.

In Sunday’s 4-2 win over the White Sox, San Diego scored three runs in the eighth inning, capped by a home run from Fernando Tatis Jr., marking his 20th of the season.

"We have a really strong team, and we’ll keep doing what we’ve done all year," said Padres third baseman and former Dodger Manny Machado. "Nothing’s changing. We just need to play good baseball and finish the season strong."

On Tuesday, the Padres will send right-hander Michael King (12-9, 3.04) to the mound. King is 1-0 with a 3.63 ERA in his career against the Dodgers across four appearances (two starts).

This season, King has faced Los Angeles three times (two starts), posting a 4.11 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings, but has given up five home runs. Ohtani has hit three home runs against King in his career, while Betts has hit two.
