Game Preview
More excitement lies ahead for the top two teams in the National League West as they face off on Wednesday, following the San Diego Padres’ thrilling 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the series opener.
The Padres (91-66) secured a playoff spot with a dramatic game-ending triple play on Tuesday, just four days after the Dodgers (93-64) clinched their postseason berth, bolstered by three home runs and 10 RBIs from Shohei Ohtani.
The Dodgers were attempting a ninth-inning comeback with a run in and two runners on base when Ohtani was due up next. However, Miguel Rojas hit a ground ball to third, resulting in a triple play that ended the game, with Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, and Donovan Solano executing the play flawlessly.
The victory sparked a champagne celebration in the Padres’ locker room as they celebrated their eighth playoff appearance in franchise history and third since 2020.
"We’re not finished yet," Machado stated on San Diego’s 93.7-FM. "We’ll celebrate tonight, then it’s back to business tomorrow."
Cronenworth added, "There’s a bit more pressure, but this group is prepared; we’ve handled it all season."
The Padres have an 8-3 record against the Dodgers this year and hold the tiebreaker should the teams end the regular season tied on Sunday. The Dodgers lead the division by two games, with both teams already in the playoffs.
In Tuesday’s game, Cronenworth contributed a home run and three RBIs, also playing a key role in the defensive play that sealed the victory. This marked his first RBIs in 19 September games.
San Diego has surged to an MLB-best 41-17 record since the All-Star break.
Ohtani, recently named NL Player of the Week for hitting six home runs, stealing seven bases, and driving in 17 runs over the Dodgers’ previous seven games, was limited to a double and a walk on Tuesday, scoring only due to a throwing error by Xander Bogaerts.
After showing a bunt on the first pitch from right-hander Robert Suarez, Rojas hit into the Padres’ first triple play since 2010.
"I thought I had a chance to get a bunt down early but couldn’t execute," Rojas reflected. "Given their defensive setup, swinging made more sense… It’s been tough lately, and I feel like I let the team down."
Both teams will send their likely No. 1 playoff starters to the mound on Wednesday, with the Padres’ Dylan Cease (14-11, 3.42 ERA) facing Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty (13-7, 3.10).
Cease has been impressive in his recent outings, including a scoreless performance with 10 strikeouts on September 13 in a 5-0 win against the San Francisco Giants. He has a 1-1 record with a 1.72 ERA in three career starts against the Dodgers.
Flaherty has allowed a total of seven runs in his last two starts but secured a win last Thursday against Miami. He is 6-2 with a 3.40 ERA in nine starts since his trade from the Detroit Tigers and has a 2-1 record with a 4.26 ERA in five career starts against the Padres.
