Game Preview
Shohei Ohtani is heading to the playoffs for the first time in his career after achieving a historic 50-50 season and emerging as the frontrunner for the National League MVP Award, all while striving for even more.
The typically reserved Ohtani celebrated enthusiastically after delivering a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game, leading the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres and bringing them closer to their 11th NL West title in 12 years.
Ohtani has the opportunity to help secure the division when the teams face off for the last time in the regular season on Thursday night in Los Angeles.
"I feel a heightened sense of excitement from both the fans and within the team during these crucial games," Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton.
The Dodgers (94-64) have a magic number of two to clinch the division, and a win on Thursday will achieve their regular-season goal.
"Celebrating in front of our home fans would mean a lot," said Ohtani, who won the 2023 World Baseball Classic with Japan but hadn’t made the MLB playoffs in his first six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.
Ohtani has excelled in September, boasting a .364 batting average with nine home runs, 27 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases, including one on Wednesday that brought his season total to 56 steals alongside 53 home runs.
On Thursday, the Dodgers will start right-hander Walker Buehler (1-6, 5.63 ERA), who recently had a season-best performance with nine strikeouts in a 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Buehler has a strong history against the Padres, holding a 6-1 record with a 1.80 ERA in 11 career starts.
Los Angeles will be missing shortstop Miguel Rojas, who is set for an MRI on his left groin after leaving Wednesday’s game, but hopes to participate in one of the Dodgers’ final three games against Colorado over the weekend. Tommy Edman is expected to step in at shortstop.
Despite the loss on Wednesday, the Padres (91-67) hold an 8-4 record against the Dodgers this season and secured a playoff spot with their victory in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Following a celebratory locker room gathering, they nearly pulled off another win on Wednesday.
Fernando Tatis Jr. contributed a home run, his 21st of the season, marking his 12th home run in just 33 games at Dodger Stadium.
San Diego has the best record since the All-Star break at 41-18 and is close to clinching the National League’s top wild-card spot, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets by 3.5 games. The Padres and Diamondbacks are set to face each other in a three-game series this weekend in Phoenix.
"We’ll keep pushing forward," Tatis said. "We still have a chance, and we’ll maintain our energy for Thursday’s game."
The Padres will send right-hander Joe Musgrove (6-5, 3.95 ERA) to the mound, looking to extend his scoreless streak after not allowing a run in his last two starts and three of his last four, totaling 18 innings.
Musgrove is seeking his first career victory against the Dodgers in his 13th start, holding an 0-7 record with a 4.48 ERA in 62 1/3 innings against them.
