Game Preview
July was a standout month for San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease, who aims to maintain his stellar form as he faces the Pittsburgh Pirates in the start of a three-game series on Tuesday.
Cease (11-8, 3.42 ERA), named the National League Pitcher of the Month for July, went 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA last month, limiting opponents to a .143 batting average. He is on a four-game winning streak, including a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals on July 25, and has allowed just one run and five hits over 27 2/3 innings during this stretch. His most recent outing was a dominant 8-1 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
At 28 years old, Cease boasts a 1-0 record with a 2.53 ERA in two career starts against Pittsburgh and has posted a remarkable 0.33 ERA with 36 strikeouts in his last four starts.
"Every game now is crucial," Cease said following the Dodgers win. "We need to maintain this focus and intensity for every game. We’re looking strong right now."
The Padres, after a tumultuous first half, have surged post-All-Star break with 11 wins in 14 games and five consecutive series victories, including a recent series win over the Colorado Rockies.
"We’ve been consistent in starting pitching and run scoring, and our clean defense and smart baserunning are key," said Padres manager Mike Shildt. "That’s a solid formula for success."
San Diego entered Monday’s games as the second National League wild card team, just half a game ahead in the standings and only 4.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
The Pirates, on the other hand, are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 6-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, where they squandered a 4-0 lead. This defeat was part of a series loss and left them 3.5 games behind the final wild card spot held by Arizona.
"We failed to finish off the game, especially with two strikes," said Pirates manager Derek Shelton. "We need to execute better."
In the loss, reliever Colin Holderman struggled, walking two batters and allowing a decisive three-run homer to Joc Pederson, which gave the Diamondbacks the lead.
