Game Preview
Fernando Tatis Jr. is nearing another 20-home run season as the San Diego Padres aim for another victory at San Francisco on Saturday.
Tatis launched his 17th homer of the season during a three-run first inning in Friday’s 5-0 victory over the Giants, following Luis Arraez’s leadoff single.
The 25-year-old Tatis, who hit 22 homers in his 2019 rookie year, has only fallen short of 20 homers twice in his career—hitting 17 during the 60-game 2020 season and missing the 2022 season due to injury and suspension.
He topped the National League with 42 homers in 2021 over 130 games and added 25 last year in 141 games. After a stress fracture in his right thigh sidelined him for 59 games this season, he’s returned with homers in three consecutive games since September 2.
Feeling confident, Tatis is a key player as the Padres (83-65) contend with the Diamondbacks, Mets, and Braves for a wild-card spot.
"I’m feeling really confident and believe I can achieve anything on the field right now," Tatis stated.
In last week’s series in San Diego, Tatis went 3-for-10 with a double as the Giants won two of three. He also contributed to San Diego’s early rally against Giants starter Mason Black last Friday, which Manny Machado capped off with a homer.
Black (0-3, 7.50 ERA), who settled after allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings in his Padres debut, looks to notch his first major league win against them again Saturday.
“I’m aiming to build on each game, learning from both the highs and the lows,” said Black.
Facing Black will be Padres’ right-hander Joe Musgrove (5-5, 4.54), who gave up three homers in a six-run inning to the Giants last Sunday. Musgrove has a 4-5 record with a 4.46 ERA in 15 career starts against San Francisco.
