Game Preview
As August winds down, Manny Machado is finding his stride.
This Saturday, Machado looks to maintain his impressive form as the San Diego Padres aim to clinch a series win against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.
In Friday’s series opener, Machado sparked the Padres with three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs, leading to a 13-5 victory. The six-time All-Star has now matched Adrian Gonzalez with 161 home runs, ranking him second in Padres’ franchise history, just two shy of Nate Colbert’s record.
"It’s significant," Machado commented. "Being mentioned alongside such great names in such a short time is truly an honor."
Over his last eight games, Machado boasts a .382 average, with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and six runs, contributing to the Padres’ five victories in this stretch, keeping them competitive for the National League’s prime wild-card position.
Rookie Jackson Merrill has also been key, hitting sixth and maintaining a .333 batting average over his last 15 games, including a crucial RBI single on Friday.
Padres manager Mike Shildt praised the lineup’s structure, noting, "Having five solid hitters before him works well. They have the experience, and Merrill is thriving in his spot."
San Diego will send Randy Vasquez (4-6, 4.52 ERA) to the mound Saturday, facing off against Tampa Bay’s Shane Baz (1-2, 3.48 ERA) in a matchup of right-handers.
Vasquez, coming off his first win in over a month, is set to face the Rays for the first time in his career.
Baz is set to pitch after recovering from a flu that sidelined him last Sunday. "I’m fully ready to go," Baz confirmed after a bullpen session.
His last performance on Aug. 20 saw him hold the Oakland Athletics to just three hits in a narrow 1-0 win, marking one of his best outings yet.
Meanwhile, the Rays are looking to bounce back from recent struggles, having lost six of their last eight games. Compounding their challenges, Yandy Diaz exited Friday’s game with left patellar tendinitis after tweaking his knee.
Rays manager Kevin Cash described Diaz’s condition as day-to-day, noting he’s unlikely to play Saturday. Jonathan Aranda, who stepped in for Diaz, will look for a chance to impress after a season marred by injuries.
"We’re hoping Aranda can step up, especially after the setbacks he’s had this year," Cash added.
