Game Preview
The San Francisco Giants aim to extend their impressive pitching streak as they face the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night for the second game of their series.
Following Logan Webb’s five-hit shutout against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, Blake Snell delivered a historic performance on Friday. Snell threw the first no-hitter of his career, and the 18th in Giants history, leading the team to a 3-0 win and marking their sixth victory in seven games.
Snell, who walked three and struck out 11, was the subject of trade rumors before the deadline. "Everyone’s playing for someone else," said Mike Yastrzemski, who made a key catch to end the game.
With the win, the Giants improved to 55-56, just a game shy of .500, and are now two games ahead of the Reds in the National League wild-card race. This marks the first time since 2002 that the Giants have achieved back-to-back complete-game shutouts, reflecting a growing camaraderie in the clubhouse.
Left-hander Kyle Harrison (6-4, 3.69 ERA) will start for the Giants, aiming for a third consecutive strong outing. Harrison pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-hit ball in his last game against the Rockies on July 26.
The Reds will counter with right-hander Hunter Greene (7-4, 2.97 ERA), who has been Cincinnati’s most reliable starter, boasting a 0.33 ERA over four July starts. Greene allowed just one run in his previous four outings, though the Reds won only two of those games.
Greene will be making his second career start against the Giants, having allowed only one unearned run in his first start against them last August.
The Reds, who began their homestand with two wins, have lost their last two games, including Friday’s no-hitter, their first no-hit loss since May 2019.
