Game Preview

As the Colorado Rockies host the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon, the spotlight will also shine 1,800 miles away in Cooperstown, N.Y., where Rockies’ legend Todd Helton will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Helton, the first player to enter the Hall representing Colorado for his entire career, underscores a proud moment for a franchise currently facing challenges this season. Nevertheless, the Rockies have an opportunity to sweep their National League West rivals, the Giants, in this series.

The pitching matchup in Denver features Giants’ rookie Hayden Birdsong (1-0, 3.72 ERA) against the Rockies’ Ryan Feltner (1-9, 5.36 ERA), both right-handers. Birdsong, with only four major league starts to his name, is tasked with halting San Francisco’s skid at the start of the second half—a persistent issue for the team over the past three years.

Birdsong stepped into the rotation due to injuries, including those to Robbie Ray and Blake Snell, and debuted on June 26 against the Chicago Cubs, giving up three runs over 4 2/3 innings. He claimed his first major league win six days later with a five-inning performance against the Atlanta Braves. Although he hasn’t pitched more than five innings yet, he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in his last three starts.

At 22, Birdsong has never faced the Rockies and might return to the minors soon, but he has impressed manager Bob Melvin. "He seems more and more comfortable every time he goes out there," Melvin noted. "He’s pitched well when there was a need, and although he’s had limited starts in Triple-A, he’s performed quite well for us here. We have big expectations for him moving forward."

On the other side, Feltner is desperate to break a winless streak that has lasted three months. His last win came on April 12 in Toronto, and since then, he’s gone 0-8 with eight no-decisions. His recent performance included a challenging outing against the New York Mets on July 13, where he walked five batters in just 3 2/3 innings. Despite the struggles, Feltner remains focused, trying not to let frustration hinder his efforts towards securing another win.
