Game Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to welcome the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, marking a series of notable returns.

The Giants are excited to start left-hander Robbie Ray, making his first appearance on the mound since undergoing Tommy John surgery and repairing a forearm flexor tendon last season. This will be Ray’s debut in a Giants uniform and his first major league game since March 31 of last year.

On the mound for the Dodgers will be Tyler Glasnow (8-5, 3.47 ERA), who is coming off a nearly three-week stint on the injured list due to lower back tightness.

Giants manager Bob Melvin has indicated that Ray will be on a pitch limit, though specifics weren’t disclosed. "There will be somewhat of a limit," Melvin explained. "He doesn’t really want to talk about that, and knowing Robbie, he wants to push as hard as he can for as long as he can. But we’ll definitely have some restrictions."

Ray, who has a history of pitching against the Dodgers with an 8-6 record and a 3.39 ERA in 21 starts, hasn’t faced them since 2020.

The Giants also hope rookie Tyler Fitzgerald continues his impressive performance. Fitzgerald recently homered in his fifth consecutive game, a feat not seen since Barry Bonds in 2004. Fitzgerald modestly commented, "It’s cool and all, but I’m just trying to keep my head down, keep working and not really think about everything that’s going on."

Despite Fitzgerald’s heroics, the Giants have struggled post-All-Star break, winning only one of their five games.

Glasnow’s last outing was on July 5 against the Milwaukee Brewers, where he surrendered five runs over six innings. Now at 109 innings this season, he is close to surpassing his career high of 120 innings set last year with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Glasnow has a solid track record against the Giants, holding a 3-0 record with a 3.52 ERA in five appearances, including four starts.
