Game Preview
Recently facing a couple of defeats, the Milwaukee Brewers are hoping to turn things around in their upcoming game against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night. Freddy Peralta (8-7, 3.86 ERA), the Brewers’ starting pitcher, is slated to face Giants’ left-hander Kyle Harrison (7-5, 4.00 ERA) in an effort to split the three-game series.
San Francisco took the first game of the series with a 5-4 win, thanks to three home runs, including a pivotal two-run homer by Mike Yastrzemski in the seventh inning, with Matt Chapman and Grant McCray also going deep. The victory marked only the 10th time the Giants have come from behind after the sixth inning this season.
For Milwaukee, rookies Jackson Chourio and Willy Adames each hit two-run homers, providing all the runs for their team. However, the Brewers left 11 runners on base and were only 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
A week ago, Milwaukee had a substantial 11 1/2 game lead in the NL Central, but that has since narrowed to nine games over the Chicago Cubs, who have gained ground by going 5-2 in their last seven games, while the Brewers have gone 3-4.
San Francisco remains 5 1/2 games behind in the race for the final NL wild-card spot.
Chourio, having a standout rookie season, hit the Brewers’ longest homer of the year at 449 feet and has been batting .315 with 11 home runs over his last 67 games. Adames leads the team with 24 home runs and 88 RBIs, showcasing his clutch hitting with 17 homers coming with runners on base.
In Peralta’s recent performance, he pitched five scoreless innings but did not factor in the decision during a 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. "Peralta delivered a solid five innings of shutout ball, but I didn’t want to push him past 100 pitches with important games ahead," said Brewers manager Pat Murphy.
Over his last seven starts, Peralta has a 3.20 ERA, striking out 34 and walking 17 in just over 39 innings, though he has struggled historically against the Giants with a 6.75 ERA in three games.
The Giants have been involved in several close games, winning two out of their last four one-run games. "Each game has its own dynamics. We are constantly reminded of the intensity, especially against strong teams," commented Giants manager Bob Melvin.
Grant McCray has made a significant impact since his call-up, hitting safely in eight of 11 games and batting .308.
Kyle Harrison earned a win in his last outing, allowing just one run against the Chicago White Sox, and has a 3.47 ERA over his last seven starts despite a tougher August. This will be his first time facing the Brewers in his career.
