Game Preview
The Houston Astros can finally take a breather for the next few days.
In contrast, the Seattle Mariners are still in a fight for their postseason lives as they prepare for the series finale on Wednesday in Houston.
The Astros (86-72) clinched their fourth consecutive American League West title with a 4-3 victory over the Mariners on Tuesday, following Seattle’s 6-1 win in the series opener on Monday, which had delayed the Astros’ celebration.
Houston is secured as the No. 3 seed and will host a best-of-three wild-card series beginning on October 1.
For the Mariners, Tuesday’s loss left them 2.5 games behind the final AL wild-card spot with just four games remaining.
This year’s division clincher was especially poignant, as the Astros once trailed the Mariners by 10 games in mid-June. Houston managed to tie Seattle at the top of the division just over a month later, finishing 53-32 since June 18 to maintain their dominance.
"The start to the season wasn’t ideal, but we knew how talented we were. It was just a matter of time before we found our rhythm," said Astros right fielder Kyle Tucker.
While it was tough for the Mariners to watch their rivals celebrate, they understand that they cannot dwell on losing their division lead.
"We can’t feel sorry for ourselves," said Seattle right-hander Logan Gilbert. "We need to focus on what’s ahead. We have four games left, and we need to win them all."
After Wednesday’s game, the Mariners will return home to face the Oakland Athletics in their final regular-season series. They must surpass two teams in the standings within the last five days to secure a wild-card spot.
"There are many scenarios still in play," remarked Mariners manager Dan Wilson. "We need to keep fighting and see what happens."
Seattle will send right-hander George Kirby (13-11, 3.60 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday to face former Mariner Yusei Kikuchi (9-9, 4.19) of the Astros.
Both pitchers have delivered quality starts in three of their last four outings.
Kirby is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in four starts this month, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks over his last two starts against the Texas Rangers.
The third-year pitcher holds a 2-0 record with a 1.56 ERA in six career starts against the Astros, allowing only three runs in 18 innings across three starts this season without earning a decision.
Kikuchi has gone 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA in his last four starts. In his most recent outing, he held the Los Angeles Angels to one run over six innings, striking out nine.
Having played for the Mariners from 2019 to 2021, Kikuchi has been effective against them since his departure, boasting a 1-0 record and a 0.52 ERA in three career starts against Seattle, including a dominant performance where he allowed one run on three hits while striking out nine in a six-inning start for the Toronto Blue Jays on April 10.
