Game Preview

Jack Kochanowicz is set to make his major league debut on the mound for the Los Angeles Angels as they begin a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday in Anaheim, California.

Kochanowicz, a 6-foot-7 right-hander, will be called up from Double-A Rocket City. The 23-year-old has a 5-6 record with a 4.55 ERA in 16 starts this season. However, he has shown improvement in his last nine starts with a 2.90 ERA and has thrown two complete games in his past three outings.

"I thought it was definitely in the cards," Kochanowicz said of his call-up. "It was my first big-league camp this year, which was very, very exciting at the time, but just definitely thought it was possible."

Angels manager Ron Washington hopes Kochanowicz can pitch deep into the game after the bullpen combined for 17 innings in the past three games, allowing just three earned runs. The relievers contributed 4 2/3 scoreless innings in a 7-2 win against the visiting Texas Rangers on Wednesday, ending a three-game losing streak.

Kochanowicz faces a tough challenge against the Mariners, who lead the American League West by two games over the Houston Astros. Seattle recently completed a two-game sweep against the San Diego Padres, marking their first series win in nearly a month.

The Mariners aim to extend their winning streak to three games with veteran right-hander Luis Castillo starting in the series opener. Castillo (7-9, 3.72 ERA) is coming off his best start in more than a month, holding the Toronto Blue Jays to one run and two hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 2-1 win on Friday, which was also his 200th major league start. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Blue Jays before giving up a leadoff solo home run.
