For the first time in ten years, the Seattle Seahawks will not enter the season with Russell Wilson as their signal-caller. The nine-time pro-bowler and Super Bowl champion was traded to Denver in the spring. The Seahawks, who suffered their first losing season last year since 2012, will have a journeyman and an unproven player to replace the future hall-of-famer. After trading the face of the franchise, the Seahawks weren’t interested in any other quarterback options in the likes of Baker Mayfield, Deshaun Watson or Jimmy Garoppolo and decided to stick with Geno Smith and Drew Lock, who was acquired from Denver in the Wilson trade. Smith is a fine backup but that is about all he is and Lock entered the league with some upside but hasn’t come close to live up to the status.
Head Coach Pete Carroll is going to have to pull a rabbit out of his hat with the roster he assembled and while he has very good skill-position players, trading away Wilson will impact his team’s production far more than he anticipated. Smith, who has been tabbed as the starter in the team’s opener, does have weapons at the wide receiver position with D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett but both may have been the by-product of Wilson’s ability to feed them the ball with relative ease. It remains to be seen if Smith can provide the duo the same production with consistency. The good news for Smith is that he can count on a solid rusher in the backfield in Rashaad Penny, who ran for 749 yards in 10 games last year but his last three games were phenomenal as he averaged 165 yards during that stretch.
The Seahawks also drafted RB Kenneth Walker III in the second round so the reasoning is that the offense will rely heavily on the running game. The Seahawks also added some talent to protect Smith and open lanes for the backs when they drafted tackle Charles Cross in the first round and Abraham Lucas in the third. Both will start immediately. While there is plenty of questions on offense, the quality of the defense is even less certain. Outside of the secondary with safeties Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams, the pass rush deficiencies needed to be addressed. The Seahawks signed DE Uchenna Nwosu, who collected five sacks for the Chargers last season, and drafted LB Boye Mafe to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. DE Shelby Harris, who was part of the Wilson trade, is a great addition. The 31-year-old logged in six sacks for the Broncos last year.
Apart from the Falcons and both New York teams, the Seahawks will have problems competing with the teams on the rest of their schedule. While they play the Rams, 49ers and the Cardinals twice, they have the Chiefs, Raiders, Buccaneers and start their season against Wilson and the Broncos.

The Bottom Line:
It is hard to believe in either quarterback options so it should be a ground-and-pound philosophy with the running game. That one-dimensional aspect of their offense will be figured out by most opposing teams and without a passing game to speak of, this will be a long season for the Seahawks.
