Game Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves, both currently second in their respective divisions, are poised for a competitive playoff chase as they kick off a three-game series in Atlanta this Friday.

Entering the second half, the Braves trail the Philadelphia Phillies by 8 1/2 games in the National League East, while the Cardinals are 4 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. Atlanta is currently leading the wild-card race, holding a 3 1/2 game lead over St. Louis.

The Cardinals previously won two out of three games against the Braves during their early June series in St. Louis.

The series opener will feature a pitching duel between St. Louis’s Sonny Gray (9-6, 3.34 ERA) and Atlanta’s Spencer Schwellenbach (3-4, 4.43 ERA). Gray has struggled recently, with a 6.06 ERA across his last three starts, including a seven-inning stint where he surrendered three runs in a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Historically, Gray is 0-3 with a 3.38 ERA in six career starts against the Braves.

On the other hand, Schwellenbach has found form, winning his last two starts and registering a 1.38 ERA in July. His most recent performance included a seven-inning effort where he allowed just one run in a 6-1 victory over San Diego. Schwellenbach had a rougher outing against the Cardinals on June 24, giving up four runs over six innings in a 4-3 defeat.

As the Braves aim to close the gap with the Phillies, they have shifted their strategy from seeking long winning streaks to making steady, incremental improvements, hoping this approach will propel them through the postseason.
