Game Preview

After the trade deadline passed with him remaining with the Chicago Cubs, starting pitcher Jameson Taillon is eager to drive the team forward. He will take the mound on Saturday as the Cubs face the St. Louis Cardinals in the third game of their four-game series at Wrigley Field.

Following a 5-4 win in the series opener and a 6-3 victory on Friday, Taillon (7-6, 3.35 ERA) is optimistic about the Cubs’ prospects.

"I really believe we have a solid team now, and our recent moves have made us even better," Taillon said. "It’s exciting for the future, and if this year doesn’t pan out, we’re set up well for next year. I love Chicago, and I’m thrilled to be here."

Despite being the focus of trade rumors leading up to the deadline, which may have impacted his performance, Taillon is committed to the Cubs. In his last start on Monday, he struggled, giving up six runs in 4 1/3 innings during a 7-1 loss to the Reds.

"Being in the trade talks can be distracting," Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged. "It’s natural for it to affect you."

Before Monday’s game, Taillon had allowed three earned runs or fewer in 16 of his previous 17 starts. He holds a 1-1 record with a 4.15 ERA against the Cardinals this season and a career 6-2 record with a 3.45 ERA in 15 starts against them.

The Cardinals, having lost six of their last nine games, aim to boost their offense after failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities in Friday’s game.

They will counter with right-hander Kyle Gibson (7-4, 3.97 ERA), who last pitched against the Washington Nationals. Gibson, whose outing was interrupted by a rain delay, allowed two runs on six hits in five innings but took the loss in St. Louis’ 14-3 defeat.
