Game Preview

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray, who boasts 10 wins this season, will look to bounce back in Thursday’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs. Gray (10-6, 3.79 ERA) is eager to move past a challenging July, where he went 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA across four starts, surrendering 18 earned runs on 32 hits and four walks in 24 innings. His last outing saw him take a loss against the Washington Nationals, allowing five runs over five innings.

Despite recent struggles, Gray remains optimistic about turning his season around. "Physically, I’m feeling good," Gray said. "I’m just not putting up zeroes right now. I know what I need to do and I’m committed to getting back on track."

In his career, Gray holds a 5-4 record with a 2.86 ERA against the Cubs but has been less effective at Wrigley Field, with a 1-2 record and a 4.71 ERA in four starts.

The Cardinals, currently second in the NL Central and trailing Milwaukee by five games, enter the series with momentum from a two-game winning streak. They recently defeated the Texas Rangers 10-1, with rookie right-hander Michael McGreevy earning high praise for his impressive major league debut.

On the other side, Cubs rookie left-hander Shota Imanaga (8-2, 2.95 ERA) will make his second start against the Cardinals. Imanaga previously limited the Cardinals to one run over seven innings in a June 15 victory. The Cubs have a strong 15-4 record when he pitches, the best in the NL.

Chicago, trailing Milwaukee by 10 games and the wild-card spot by 6.5 games, recently ended a six-game road trip by defeating the Reds 13-4. Ian Happ hit a two-run homer, Cody Bellinger had a three-hit game with two RBIs, and Isaac Paredes contributed with two doubles and three runs, highlighting a season-high 17 hits and nine doubles for the Cubs.
