Game Preview

The Chicago Cubs experienced the fickleness of momentum on Saturday, revealing how quickly it can shift for teams vying for the National League wild-card spots. On Sunday night, they face the St. Louis Cardinals, who are in a more advantageous position in the wild-card race.

Heading into the final game of their four-game series, the Cubs lead 2-1. Right-hander Miles Mikolas (8-8, 4.99 ERA) will pitch for the Cardinals against the Cubs’ left-hander Justin Steele (2-5, 3.38 ERA).

The Cardinals secured a 5-4 victory on Saturday thanks to Lars Nootbaar’s go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. Tommy Pham’s leadoff triple set the stage for Nootbaar’s flyout, overcoming a 4-1 deficit. The win brought the Cardinals to within two games of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who currently hold the final NL wild-card spot.

Chicago’s pitching was solid until fielding errors contributed to a three-run rally by the Cardinals in the eighth inning. Cubs third baseman Isaac Paredes made a throwing error on a Brendan Donovan grounder, allowing a run to score. Later, a miscommunication between Nico Hoerner and rookie Pete Crow-Armstrong led to two more runs as a pop-up fell in for a hit.

Cubs starter Kyle Gibson noted, "You get a run out of a throwing mistake," while acknowledging that sometimes you just need to put the ball in play to capitalize on errors.

The loss interrupted a three-game winning streak for the Cubs, who missed an opportunity to close within three games of .500 for the first time since July 12. They are currently six games behind the Diamondbacks in the wild-card race, with five teams ahead of them.

Manager Craig Counsell mentioned that Crow-Armstrong’s over-aggressiveness contributed to the loss, adding that the Cubs’ next 14 games are against American League teams, making this series with the Cardinals one of their final opportunities to gain ground against wild-card contenders.

Mikolas did not get a decision in his last start on July 28, where he allowed three runs over six innings in a 4-3 win against the Washington Nationals. He has a 6-5 record with a 2.97 ERA in 22 career games against the Cubs, including a 1-1 record with a 5.09 ERA in three starts this season. Steele, who lost his last outing on Tuesday, has a 4-1 record with a 3.47 ERA in six career starts against the Cardinals.
