Game Preview
Paul Goldschmidt’s performance has declined, leading to a lower batting position as the new No. 7 hitter for the Cardinals.
In his second game in this new lineup role, he’ll face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night as St. Louis opens a three-game series.
Following a challenging doubleheader on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves, where he went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts, Goldschmidt was moved down in the order. He did hit a home run in Sunday’s 6-2 win over the Braves but also struck out twice and grounded into a double play.
The seven-time All-Star expressed acceptance of his new batting order position, a spot he last occupied in 2012 while with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"Obviously, I haven’t played well this year, and I’m trying to do everything I can to improve," Goldschmidt stated, acknowledging his batting average of .225 with 14 homers and 38 RBIs over 95 games. "I hate it more than anyone that my performance has occasionally cost us games this year."
As Goldschmidt approaches his 37th birthday in September, the Cardinals are hopeful that this lineup change might spark a resurgence in his performance. Goldschmidt, a veteran of 14 MLB seasons and over 30 homers in seven of those, is now in his sixth season with St. Louis after an eight-year stint with Arizona. The team is optimistic about a resurgence from "Goldy" in the remaining 63 games of the season.
