Game Preview

Shohei Ohtani continues his pursuit of baseball’s first 50-home run and 50-stolen base season as the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday in the final game of their three-game series.

Ohtani kicked off the series on Friday with a game-ending grand slam, making him the sixth player in MLB history to reach 40 steals and 40 home runs in a single season. He added a go-ahead homer on Saturday, but the Rays fought back to win 9-8 in extra innings, snapping the Dodgers’ five-game winning streak. Teoscar Hernandez and Miguel Rojas also contributed homers for Los Angeles.

The Dodgers’ lead in the National League West is now three games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks and 4.5 games over the San Diego Padres. Despite the loss, the Dodgers have won 11 of their last 15 games, even with their top two starters, Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, sidelined due to injuries.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted the positive momentum Ohtani brings, emphasizing the team’s competitive spirit as they approach the end of the season. Rookie right-hander Gavin Stone (11-5, 3.44 ERA) will take the mound for Los Angeles. Stone faced the Rays last season but struggled, allowing seven runs on ten hits in just two innings.

The Rays made some key home runs on Saturday, with Junior Caminero tying the game in the ninth with a solo shot and Jose Caballero hitting a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th inning. Caminero has hit two home runs in the last two games against the Dodgers.

Tampa Bay scored four runs in the first inning against veteran Clayton Kershaw and totaled five runs during his five-inning outing. Former Dodgers player Jonny DeLuca drove in two runs, and Garrett Cleavinger recorded his fourth save, getting Ohtani to fly out with the tying run at the plate.

The Rays are 3-3 on their 10-game road trip and will start left-hander Jacob Lopez (0-0, 8.44 ERA) on Sunday. Lopez last pitched in the majors on May 5 and has not faced the Dodgers. He may be followed by right-hander Shane Baz (1-2, 3.48), who recently returned from Tommy John surgery and achieved his first win of the season against the Oakland Athletics. Baz is set to make his debut against the Dodgers.
