Game Preview
After a challenging debut with the St. Louis Cardinals, right-hander Erick Fedde will seek redemption in his first home start for the team. Fedde (7-5, 3.34 ERA) is set to pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night as the Cardinals continue their three-game series.
In Tuesday’s opener, Victor Scott II and Tommy Pham each hit two-run homers to lead the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory. Brandon Lowe contributed a two-run shot for the Rays.
Fedde, who joined the Cardinals from the Chicago White Sox just before the trade deadline, faced difficulties in his last outing, a 6-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs. He allowed five runs on six hits, including two homers, over five innings.
“I think I let the moment get a little big and things sped up,” Fedde said about his performance. “I made mistakes I can’t afford to repeat. It’s important to move on and focus on the next start.”
Fedde’s command was off during that game, and he admitted he was missing his target frequently.
Earlier this season, Fedde had a strong performance against the Rays while with the White Sox, securing a 4-2 win by giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out nine in 8 1/3 innings.
The Rays will counter with right-hander Taj Bradley (6-5, 2.71 ERA), who was named American League Pitcher of the Month for July. Although Bradley was dominant for much of last month, his most recent start ended in a 6-2 loss to the Miami Marlins, where he allowed four runs on four hits.
This will be Bradley’s first appearance against the Cardinals.
In a trade deadline move, the Rays acquired outfielder Dylan Carlson from the Cardinals. Carlson made an immediate impact with a home run in his second game with Tampa Bay, after struggling with a .515 OPS and no homers in 121 at-bats for St. Louis this season.
Carlson sees the trade as an opportunity for a fresh start in his career.
