After a heartbreaking loss to the eventual Super Bowl champions LA Rams in the 2021 divisional playoffs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seemed to had lost even more as quarterback Tom Brady decided that his 22-year career was over. But like a freed prisoner unable to cope with life outside of jail, the GOAT rescinded on his decision to leave the gridiron and decided to return for another possible Super Bowl run. While Brady figures to be a force even at 45-years old, his receiving corps won’t be as potent as it was last season with Antonio Brown gone and the retirement of TE Rob Gronkowski. WR Mike Evans is still the No. 1 receiver but there are concerns about the health of WR Chris Godwin, who tore his ACL late last season.
The Buccaneers signed WR Russell Gage, who was a capable slot receiver for the Falcons but losing Gronkowski was huge. Gronk could easily change his mind and return but if he doesn’t, that leaves Brady with Cameron Brate and rookie Cade Otton as targets at the tight end position. Brady, however, does have the luxury to use all his running backs as receivers. RB Leonard Fournette, who ran for 812 yards and caught 69 balls for 454 yards, will be the primary back along with Giovani Bernard. The team could also use third-round pick Rachaad White, who is likely to play a significant part in the offense. The Buccaneers lost two guards to retirement but acquired Shaq Mason from the Patriots to cover for the losses.
Defensively, the Buccaneers lost three defensive starters in Ndamukong Suh, Jason Pierre-Paul but losing safety Jordan Whitehead was a huge blow. The team did sign Logan Ryan to replace Whitehead, but the 31-year-old will certainly be on a slight decline. Ryan will join Antoine Winfield Jr. who is one of the best players at his position in the NFL. Tampa Bay replaced Suh with Logan Hall, who was picked 33rd overall in the 2022 draft. He will compete with newly signed Akiem Hicks; still a solid player despite his age (32). Of course, the star of the defensive line is Vita Vea, who made his first pro bowl last season. To replace Pierre-Paul, the Buccaneers should rely on Joe Tryo-Shoyinka, a first-round pick in the 2021 draft.
The Buccaneers have tough early schedule with Dallas, Green Bay and Kansas City in their first four weeks and also have the Ravens, Rams, 49ers, Bengals and Cardinals on their slate. However, they do face weaklings Carolina, Atlanta and New Orleans twice this season.

The Bottom Line:
The Buccaneers should be a shoe-in to come out on top of the NFC South, it will be that simple. Their passing attack and defensive front seven will be a threat again and if their secondary can bounce back from a sub-par performance last season, the Buccaneers should easily make another run to the NFC Championship game.
