Game Preview

Max Scherzer made his season debut for the Texas Rangers on June 23 but has yet to return to his dominant form. Approaching his 40th birthday on July 27, Scherzer is gradually improving, showing signs of progress.

Scherzer is set to pitch Tuesday in Anaheim, Calif., against the Los Angeles Angels in the second game of a three-game series. This will be his fourth start of the season following offseason back surgery.

While he’s not quite the same pitcher who won three Cy Young Awards and finished in the top five eight times, Scherzer has felt better with each start since his return.

Scherzer (1-2, 2.70 ERA) has progressively increased his innings and pitch count, reaching 6 1/3 innings and 90 pitches in his last outing against the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

"Physically, I’m definitely better. My arm felt stronger," Scherzer said after allowing three runs and six hits in the Rangers’ 3-1 loss to the Padres. "I got to 90 pitches and felt strong, even into the seventh inning. From a physical standpoint, I’m doing well. That’s the encouraging part of this start. I’m recovering well."

Scherzer has a successful track record against the Angels, boasting a 5-1 record with a 2.09 ERA in seven starts.

The Angels, who have lost seven of their last eight games, will need to contain Corey Seager if they hope to compete against the Rangers, who have won four straight. Seager homered and doubled in the Rangers’ 9-4 win over the Angels on Monday, giving him seven homers in his last 15 games against Los Angeles.
