Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays: Baseball, Bronx Edition

MoneylineTampa Bay (-142)
Total: 8.5

Welcome to the Bronx… Wait, What?

The Tampa Bay Rays are technically still the Rays, except now they’ve temporarily relocated to George M. Steinbrenner Field. That’s right, folks, the Yankees’ spring training home is the new baseball hotspot because, apparently, Tropicana Field needed a break from being Tropicana Field.

Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers have shown up to Florida looking confused, dazed, and a solid 12 months removed from the title that isn’t theirs anymore. With a 9-20 road record, they’ve been about as successful on the road as a flip-flop in a snowstorm.

Pitching Matchup: Jack vs. Pepi-Pop

Jack Leiter (4-2, 3.66 ERA) is taking the hill for the Rangers. He’s finally showing signs of becoming the pitcher his last name promises. Still, the pressure’s on since the Rangers forgot their offense on the team plane.

Tampa’s countering with Ryan Pepiot (3-5, 3.21 ERA), who has better stuff than his record suggests and might actually love pitching at this minor league-style venue, it’s intimate, it’s weird, and it comes with fewer Tropicana Field lighting malfunctions.

Key Players to Watch (and Hope They Remember How to Hit)

For the Rays, Junior Caminero is pounding the ball like it’s personal 14 homers and a growing highlight reel. Brandon Lowe’s back, too, and swinging like he’s making up for time on the injured list.

Texas? Well, Marcus Semien and Wyatt Langford are trying. Langford’s showing off 11 homers and a lot of effort, which is more than you can say for their bullpen half the time.

Final Prediction:

Given Tampa’s recent hot streak, their comfort in weird venues, and Texas’s aversion to winning on the road, we’re looking at a Rays win, let’s call it 5-3. Florida humidity > Texas offense.

Also, someone remind the Rangers they aren’t defending anything this year but their pride.

Final Score Prediction: Rays 5, Rangers 3
Bets Bet: Tampa Bay RL -1.5 (+145)
Total:  Under 8.5 (-105)
