Game Preview

The annual Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas doesn’t need much hype, but for bettors, it’s always a game full of potential surprises.

Oklahoma linebacker Kobie McKinzie summed up the intensity, saying the game’s history makes point spreads meaningless. “It feels like it’s hard to breathe. There’s nowhere to go,” he said of the rivalry’s electric atmosphere.

This Saturday’s matchup features No. 1 Texas as heavy favorites against No. 18 Oklahoma, played in front of a split crowd at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Despite Texas (5-0, 1-0 SEC) coming in strong, the rivalry has a history of close games, with only one of the last 10 regular-season meetings decided by more than eight points—Texas’ 49-0 blowout win in 2022.

Even Texas coach Steve Sarkisian agrees that point spreads don’t matter in rivalry games: "Records and things don’t matter in games like this," he said. Texas will likely have starting quarterback Quinn Ewers back from injury, which could sway betting odds, but Oklahoma’s defense, which thrives on forcing turnovers (13 so far), will be looking to capitalize.

Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1) is rolling with freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., who impressed in his first start. Hawkins’ calm under pressure could be crucial as he becomes the first true freshman QB to start for the Sooners in this heated matchup.

For bettors, this is a game where anything can happen, and while Texas may be favored, history suggests this rivalry often defies the odds.
