Game Preview
The New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians are familiar postseason rivals, but it’s rare for them to face off with an AL pennant at stake.
After posting the top two records in the American League, they will meet Monday night for Game 1 of the ALCS, a best-of-seven series.
“They’re a well-rounded team,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of the Guardians. “They have a great bullpen, play excellent defense, and are balanced offensively. And of course, they’ve got a star in José Ramírez who can be dangerous in the middle of their lineup.”
Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon (0-1, 9.82 ERA) will face Guardians right-hander Alex Cobb (0-1, 6.00 ERA) to open the series.
This is the seventh time these two teams have met in the playoffs, and the third in the last five seasons. The only prior ALCS matchup between them came in 1998, when the Yankees won the series in six games after trailing 2-1.
The Yankees have won the last three postseason encounters, including the ALDS in 2017 and 2022, as well as the 2020 wild-card series.
New York earned home-field advantage with a 94-68 record, narrowly beating Cleveland for the best AL mark. After defeating the Kansas City Royals in four games to close out the ALDS, the Yankees are slightly more rested. However, they batted just .220 in that series, with Aaron Judge going 2-for-13, although Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto had solid performances.
Cleveland advanced to the ALCS for the first time since 2016 after a five-game win over the Detroit Tigers. José Ramírez struggled in the series, but Steven Kwan hit .524 (11-for-21), and Lane Thomas contributed with a grand slam in their decisive Game 5 win.
The Guardians lost four of six regular-season games to the Yankees due to inconsistent offense, scoring 17 runs in their two wins but getting outscored 25-5 in the losses.
Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt is optimistic. “The Yankees are a tough team, but we know what we’re capable of. It’s going to be a fun series, and we’re ready for the challenge.”
Rodon, who was originally scheduled for Game 5 of the ALDS, will start Game 1 to avoid a long layoff. He went 16-8 in the regular season but struggled in his last outing, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings in a Game 2 loss against Kansas City. Although he didn’t face Cleveland this year, Rodon has a strong track record against the Guardians, going 8-5 with a 2.81 ERA in his career.
Alex Cobb, who took the loss in Game 3 against Detroit, will start for Cleveland. Injuries limited him to just three starts with the Guardians since joining from the Giants at the trade deadline. However, Cobb has extensive experience against the Yankees, with a 7-5 record and a 3.19 ERA in 20 starts from his time in the AL East.
“They know me well,” Cobb said. “But after everything I’ve gone through this season, I’m ready to take on the challenge of Game 1 of the ALCS.”
