Game Preview
Since the All-Star break, one of the National League’s bottom-ranked teams, the Miami Marlins, has been unsettling top contenders. Following a 6-2 win against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Friday, the Marlins are poised to clinch another series victory against a division leader on Saturday.
Post-break, Miami, which was 30 games under .500, managed a split in a four-game set at home against the NL wild-card-contending New York Mets, followed by taking two of three against the AL East leaders, the Baltimore Orioles, before stalling the Brewers’ momentum.
Miami’s manager, Skip Schumaker, commented on the team’s performance, saying, "For us to keep playing like we’re playing against these really good teams just shows what we have in the clubhouse. It should start building some confidence that they can play with anybody."
Despite averaging only 3.59 runs per game, the second-lowest in the majors, Miami has scored six runs in each of their last four games. Marlins’ first baseman Josh Bell has been a significant contributor, homering in three consecutive games, including a milestone 1,000th career hit in Friday’s victory.
Schumaker, reflecting on Bell’s achievement, remarked, "It’s hard to get one hit in the major leagues, let alone a thousand. There are a lot of tough things to do in this league, and getting a thousand hits is real."
Bell has outpaced the entire Milwaukee team in home runs since Sunday. The Brewers, meanwhile, have hit a slump, managing only two home runs and seven runs total over their last four games. Despite Rhys Hoskins’ solo home run in the third inning on Friday, Milwaukee struggled throughout the series opener, particularly with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-9 after having one of the best averages in such situations earlier in the season.
