Toronto wraps up a disappointing 3-4 homestand and heads to Progressive Field still clinging to the AL’s second wild-card slot. Eric Lauer, an Elyria, OH native, gets the ball and hopes the hometown energy translates into another solid outing. Since being recalled from Triple-A on Apr. 30, the left-hander has delivered a 3.78 ERA in four starts (0.96 ERA in relief) while the club has gone 2-0 behind him in June.
Manager John Schneider will be watching the late innings closely. Closer Jeff Hoffman coughed up Sunday’s lead with a fielding miscue and a two-run double, stretching his rough patch to 17 earned runs (and seven homers) over his last 17 frames. Even so, Schneider insists the club is “all-in” on Hoffman’s rebound. Offensively, Toronto needs a spark after managing just nine total runs across their last four contests.
Cleveland Guardians Preview
Cleveland returns from a 4-5 West-Coast swing feeling better than the record suggests, having taken sets from both the Giants and A’s after a brooming in Seattle. Southpaw Logan Allen has been sharp since a brief bullpen cameo on May 31, winning two straight and logging 17 ⅓ innings, his busiest three-start stretch of 2025.
Allen owns a 4.12 ERA in four career meetings with the Jays and limited them to two earned over 5 ⅔ innings on May 2. Stephen Vogt’s club leans on its pitching depth—Cleveland is 29-10 when out-hitting opponents and will try to pounce on a Toronto bullpen that’s leaking runs.
