Game Preview

With star guard Stephen Curry sidelined due to an ankle injury, the Golden State Warriors leaned on a stifling defense to compensate for the missing firepower in their latest outing.

Golden State locked down the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday, securing a 104-89 win and sweeping their back-to-back series. Now, the Warriors look to maintain their defensive dominance as they start a five-game road trip against the Houston Rockets on Saturday.

Curry has missed both matchups with New Orleans after suffering a left peroneal strain during Golden State’s loss to the Clippers on Sunday. Without their two-time MVP, the Warriors trailed by 20 points on Tuesday but rallied to claim a 124-106 victory. The next game, Golden State limited the Pelicans to 36.7 percent shooting, allowing their second-fewest points of the season.

Draymond Green led the defensive charge, recording five blocks—his most in three years—including four against All-Star Zion Williamson, who shot a career-low 5-for-20. Green’s impact, alongside Kyle Anderson’s strategic gameplay, enabled the Warriors to be more aggressive, blitzing and trapping effectively to mitigate Curry’s absence.

The Rockets, meanwhile, are coming off a confidence-boosting 108-102 win over the Mavericks on Thursday. Houston held a 23-point lead before withstanding a late rally by Dallas. Guard Jalen Green was instrumental, ending a scoring drought in the fourth quarter and hitting a key 3-pointer to solidify the Rockets’ lead. His performance, along with double-doubles from Green and Alperen Sengun, highlighted Houston’s improved team play and resilience.

For Houston, Thursday’s win reflected growth, showing a collective effort that often eluded them last season. “It’s a good benchmark,” Rockets coach Ime Udoka said, noting the team’s attention to detail and physicality.
