Game Preview
Three players acquired by the Atlanta Braves as injury replacements have played a crucial role in keeping the team in the playoff hunt.
As the Braves aim for a three-game series sweep against the visiting Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon, second baseman Whit Merrifield, right fielder Ramon Laureano, and third baseman Gio Urshela have all made significant contributions. The trio has combined for an impressive 11 hits in 22 at-bats during the first two games of the series, with Laureano riding an eight-game hitting streak and Merrifield reaching base in 18 straight games.
Currently, Atlanta sits five games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. The Braves have won three consecutive games and six of their last seven.
In Sunday’s series finale, the Braves will start right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (7-4, 2.05 ERA) against Nationals left-hander DJ Herz (2-6, 4.15).
Lopez returned from the injured list after a two-week absence to help secure a win against the Phillies on Tuesday. He pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out 10.
"I didn’t expect things to go as well as they did," Lopez said through an interpreter. "At the end of the day, the team won, and I feel good."
Lopez has faced the Nationals twice in his career, with an 0-1 record and a 7.20 ERA. His last outing against Washington was on June 6, where he received a no-decision after allowing two runs over six innings.
Herz, meanwhile, has been strong lately, allowing two earned runs or fewer in his last six starts, with a 3.07 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 29 1/3 innings. In his latest start, he took a loss against the Colorado Rockies despite pitching well.
"He gets on the mound and wants to attack every hitter," said Nationals manager Dave Martinez. "When he does that, he can get ahead and make his pitches."
In his only start against the Braves on June 9, Herz pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits but did not earn a decision.
While the trio of Merrifield, Laureano, and Urshela has been performing well for Atlanta, Jose Tena has been making strides for the Nationals. Tena has gone 12-for-30 (.400) over his last eight games and recorded three hits, including his first major league home run, in Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the Braves.
"It was awesome," Martinez said of Tena’s home run. "He stayed on the ball really well. He’s been hitting, and I love the way he swings."
