Game Preview

Phil Maton donned a New York Mets jersey for the first time Wednesday night and witnessed a stellar bullpen performance from his new teammates.

The Mets aim to complete a sweep of the Washington Nationals on Thursday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series.

David Peterson (3-0, 3.58 ERA) will start for the Mets, facing fellow left-hander MacKenzie Gore (6-7, 3.83 ERA).

Jose Iglesias hit a go-ahead, two-run single during a four-run sixth inning on Wednesday, leading the Mets to a 6-2 victory.

Maton, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, didn’t need to make his Mets debut thanks to an outstanding effort by relievers Jake Diekman, Danny Young, and Jose Butto. The trio held the Nationals to one hit over 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Luis Severino.

Young, called up from Triple-A Syracuse earlier in the day, recorded the first two outs of the eighth inning. Butto, who transitioned from a starter to a reliever, pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings for his first career save.

The Mets’ bullpen had struggled, allowing 13 runs over 7 1/3 innings in the previous three games, raising their season ERA to 4.24.
