Game Preview
Fueled by a crucial grand slam, the Philadelphia Phillies aim to shake off their recent slump as they kick off a four-game series against the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
Kyle Schwarber’s grand slam in the fourth inning on Wednesday powered the Phillies to a 9-5 win over the Miami Marlins, ending a four-game losing streak. The victory was only the Phillies’ eighth in their last 25 games.
"There’s that cliche about the long season, but it’s true," Schwarber said. "You want to minimize the rough patches and get back on track quickly. Teams face challenges, and overcoming them can make you stronger."
Schwarber has struggled against the Nationals this season, going 2-for-18 with 10 walks. Despite this, he helped the Phillies secure a win over Washington on May 19 with three walks and three runs scored.
Trea Turner might return to the lineup after being benched in the Marlins series. Since the All-Star break, Turner has struggled, hitting just .168 with 20 strikeouts.
The Phillies will start right-hander Zack Wheeler (11-5, 2.78 ERA) on Thursday. Wheeler has bounced back from a rough outing against the Yankees with two strong performances, including eight scoreless innings against the Mariners and a solid start against the Diamondbacks.
Wheeler is 13-15 with a 4.59 ERA in 33 career starts against Washington but won his last game against them on May 17.
The Nationals, who lost 4-1 to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, have dropped 10 of their last 16 games. Despite this, Nationals manager Dave Martinez remains optimistic about the team’s progress and competitiveness.
Washington will counter with rookie left-hander Mitchell Parker (6-6, 3.83 ERA), who earned a no-decision in his last outing, allowing two unearned runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Angels. Parker has not faced the Phillies in his career.
