Game Preview

With their first losing streak of the season behind them, the Winnipeg Jets, NHL points leaders, aim to build a new streak as they face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

The Jets rebounded decisively from consecutive losses—a 4-1 defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning and a 5-0 shutout by the Florida Panthers—by avenging the latter with a 6-3 home victory on Tuesday. Mark Scheifele’s hat trick highlighted the effort.

"We wanted to bounce back after the game in Florida. It was about character and giving our home fans a strong performance before hitting the road," Scheifele said.

The Jets, with an impressive 7-2-0 road record, kick off a six-game trip on Friday. Meanwhile, the Penguins (1-2-2 in their last five) have struggled to maintain leads. After nearly losing a three-goal advantage in Saturday’s shootout win against San Jose, Pittsburgh squandered a two-goal lead in Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Tampa Bay.

Pittsburgh’s ability to close out games remains an issue, ranking last in the NHL in winning percentage (.364) when scoring first. Defense lapses contribute significantly, as the Penguins have allowed a league-high 81 goals this season, with a cumulative 3.62 GAA from their goaltenders. Defenseman Kris Letang remains questionable due to illness.

For Winnipeg, this matchup offers an opportunity for its red-hot offense, averaging 4.21 goals per game, to exploit Pittsburgh’s struggles. Scheifele and Kyle Connor lead the Jets with 24 points each, evenly split between goals and assists.

Pittsburgh, hosting Utah on Saturday, is likely to split starts between Alex Nedeljkovic and Tristan Jarry. Similarly, the Jets face Nashville on Saturday, with backup goalie Eric Comrie a candidate for Friday’s start, potentially saving Connor Hellebuyck for the Central Division showdown.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, still dominant in his 20th season, is one goal away from a milestone 600. He leads Pittsburgh with 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists).

The Jets previously defeated the Penguins 6-3 on Oct. 20 in Winnipeg and will look to repeat that success while extending their winning ways.
