Game Preview
Since early July, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been the hottest team in Major League Baseball, looking to extend their three-game winning streak as they begin a series against the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
Arizona, a wild-card team in last year’s World Series, recently swept the Miami Marlins and has won nine out of their last 12 games, boasting an MLB-best record of 31-13 since July 1. Starting pitcher Merrill Kelly expressed confidence in the team, stating, "I know we went to the World Series last year, but I think this team is better this year… There’s no reason we can’t take it a step further this year."
The Diamondbacks are four games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have dominated the National League West for the past decade. Arizona leads the majors with 36 home runs in August, with players like Jake McCarthy and Geraldo Perdomo contributing to their recent success. Right fielder Corbin Carroll has also been impressive, hitting 12 home runs since July 7.
On Friday, Arizona will send right-hander Ryne Nelson (8-6, 4.35 ERA) to the mound, aiming for his fourth consecutive win. He has a 2.73 ERA in his last three starts, although he has never faced Boston before.
The Red Sox will counter with Brayan Bello (11-5, 4.80 ERA), who recently earned a win against the Baltimore Orioles, allowing just one run on two hits over six innings. This will also be Bello’s first matchup against the Diamondbacks.
Boston wrapped up a seven-game road trip with two straight victories against the Houston Astros, finishing the trip with a 4-3 record. Rookie Ceddanne Rafaela shone in the last game against Houston, hitting two doubles and driving in two runs. With 118 hits, 61 RBIs, and 63 runs, Rafaela leads American League rookies in several categories, and manager Alex Cora indicated that he would be playing primarily at shortstop for the remainder of the season.
"He’s been putting up good at-bats for two months already," Cora said. "In the biggest moments, he’s able to slow it down. He’s doing a lot of good things."
