Game Preview
The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to complete a three-game sweep against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday after winning the first two games of the series. Arizona dominated the opener with a 12-2 victory on Friday and followed it up with a 4-1 win on Saturday, extending their winning streak to five games, all on the road.
The Diamondbacks have now secured 11 series wins in their last 12 attempts, with their only loss coming from a sweep by Tampa Bay last weekend. Since the All-Star break, Arizona boasts an impressive record of 25-8.
Starting pitchers Ryne Nelson and Zac Gallen combined to allow just two runs on seven hits over 12 innings in the first two games. Boston manager Alex Cora praised Arizona’s pitching, saying, "They’re really good… you have to be very stubborn in the zone."
Eugenio Suarez has been a standout performer for the Diamondbacks, recording four hits and seven RBIs in the series, including five RBIs in the opener and a two-run double in Saturday’s game.
The Red Sox struggled with walks on Saturday, issuing six free passes, which included four in a crucial seventh inning that allowed Arizona to score two runs without a hit. Cora acknowledged the pitching missteps, stating, "At this level, we cannot do that."
In Sunday’s matchup, Arizona will send right-hander Merrill Kelly (3-0, 3.63 ERA) to the mound against Boston’s Tanner Houck (8-8, 3.01 ERA). Kelly has made two starts since returning from the injured list, while Houck has been in good form with three consecutive quality starts.
Kelly has faced the Red Sox twice before, boasting a 1-1 record with a 1.26 ERA. In his last meeting against them, he struck out 10 batters in 6 1/3 innings. Houck, who has also faced Arizona in the past, is looking to improve on his previous outing against them where he gave up four runs in just four innings.
The Red Sox are hopeful that outfielder Tyler O’Neill will return to the lineup on Sunday after sitting out the last three games due to a swollen finger on his left hand. Cora confirmed, "He should be in the lineup."
