New York Liberty Breakdown
After a dominant 9-0 start, the defending champs have cooled off, going just 4-6 in their last 10 games. But the Liberty showed signs of life Tuesday night, knocking off Las Vegas 87-78 with a strong defensive effort and some star-level production.
Sabrina Ionescu was on fire, dropping 28 points and dishing eight assists. Breanna Stewart stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, seven boards, and five assists, while Leonie Fiebich added 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Kennedy Burke also stood out with 10 points and six steals.
Despite being short-handed without Jonquel Jones (ankle), Natasha Cloud (hip), and Isabelle Harrison (knee), New York’s top talent delivered. Stewart (19.6 ppg) and Ionescu (19.4 ppg) remain among the W’s elite scorers, and Ionescu continues to be lethal from deep, ranking second in 3-pointers made per game.
With a 1-1 record against Atlanta this season, the Liberty will be focused on snapping their win-one, lose-one cycle.
Atlanta Dream Breakdown
Atlanta enters this matchup at 12-8 and significantly improved over last season’s 15-25 showing. The Dream are thriving offensively, now ranking third in the WNBA in scoring, a massive leap from last season’s last-place finish.
All-Star Allisha Gray is leading the charge, averaging 18.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while knocking down over 41% from beyond the arc. However, she struggled Friday against Indiana, scoring just six points as the Fever kept her bottled up with tight defense and frequent traps.
Coach Karl Smesko’s offense-first mentality has clearly made an impact. Rhyne Howard (16.5 ppg), Brionna Jones (13.6), Jordin Canada (10.5), and Brittney Griner (10.0) all give Atlanta the scoring depth to compete with top-tier opponents, even if Gray gets slowed down again.
WNBA Game Prediction:
New York’s depth and defensive tenacity should be enough to outlast a high-powered Dream offense. Expect a close first half before the Liberty pull away late. Take the Liberty -4.5 and lean toward the Under 167.0 as defense takes center stage in this one.
Score Prediction: New York 86, Atlanta 79
