Game Preview

One year ago on Tuesday, the New York Yankees faced elimination from the postseason in a disappointing loss at home.

Now, after a year away from the playoffs, the Yankees have a shot at clinching their second American League East title in three seasons when they host the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

The Orioles can secure the AL’s top wild-card spot with a win and a loss from either the Kansas City Royals or Minnesota Twins on the same day.

The Yankees (92-64) enter their final homestand with a magic number of one and a six-game lead over the Orioles (86-70), who won the division last year with a 101-61 record while New York finished 82-80.

Since September 7, the Yankees have held the division lead and have been in control for all but four days since August 20. They return home riding a wave of momentum, with 12 wins in their last 16 games after dropping two of three against Texas from September 2-4.

"We’re focused," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "Everyone understands what’s at stake and the mission ahead. The guys are ready to do what it takes to win games and give us a shot in October."

New York is coming off a successful 5-1 road trip against the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics. They secured a playoff spot for the seventh time in eight seasons on Wednesday and scored 17 runs in their last two games of a three-game sweep against Oakland.

Aaron Judge hit his league-leading 55th home run in Sunday’s 7-4 victory and is batting .349 (15-for-43) over his last 13 games. Jasson Dominguez and Gleyber Torres also contributed homers, helping the Yankees maintain a 2.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians for the best record in the AL.

"It’s going to be electric," Judge stated. "The atmosphere has been incredible all summer, and I expect that to continue as we approach the finish line."

The Orioles, while on the brink of a playoff berth, had higher expectations earlier in the season. They held or shared the AL East lead from June 27 to August 12 and were in contention earlier this month, including a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on September 6.

Since then, however, Baltimore has struggled, going 4-10 and scoring three runs or fewer in nine games, including a 4-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday where they went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and struck out 10 times.

Gunnar Henderson has been solid, hitting .308 over his last six games, but Anthony Santander has struggled at .173 over his last 14, while Adley Rutschman is batting .190 in his past six games.

"We just need to concentrate on what’s happening in our clubhouse," said Baltimore All-Star infielder Jordan Westburg, who returned from a fractured right hand on Sunday. "We can’t worry about outside opinions or what might happen. We need to stay united."

Clarke Schmidt (5-4, 2.37 ERA) will make his fourth start after missing over three months due to a lat strain. He took the loss Thursday against Seattle, allowing three runs (one earned) over six innings.

Schmidt has a 3-3 record with a 3.86 ERA in 10 career appearances (five starts) against the Orioles, having given up just one run in 5 2/3 innings against them on April 29.

Dean Kremer (7-10, 4.19) will start for the Orioles after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in six innings during a 5-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. Kremer has a 3-3 record with a 4.63 ERA in 11 career starts against the Yankees.
